Storymaking Workshop at the Guardian
A day exploring mobile storymaking with Christian Payne (@documentally).
-
It all started one Thursday evening with a tweet from @Documentally…

-
I had seen details of his workshops on Twitter before and always intended to go to one, so I jumped at the chance once I saw this tweet. A few e-mails later and my place was confirmed.
-
There was still some preparation I had to do however – downloading apps like Audioboo, Bambuser and Storify.
-
Next morning, I headed to Enfield to begin my journey into London, but managed to pop into Costa Coffee to have a ‘continental’ breakfast – To be honest, I could have done with a full English!
-
-
It was probably the hottest day of the year, so I was hoping the building would have air con. Christian was dressed for the beach and Jane wanted a supply of towels.
-
Heading to a mobile storymaking workshop at The Guardian led by @Documentally and @janematthews – hope there’s air con. #ou_msw

Dressed for the beach but heading to London to deliver a workshop at the Guardian. #ou_msw
-
Now, I have a habit of turning up ridiculously early to things like this and today was no exception. I had two hours to kill so I wrote a blog post about what I hoped to get out of the event.
-
Then chilling by the canal of course 🙂

Finally the time had come – I got my ID and felt vaguely important for a few hours at least.
-
-
-
Then at the top of the stairs was Russell Brand. A bit of a surreal start!
-
I met Russell Brand today, aka @rustyrockets He must have some kind of @Autographer blocker on as i completely missed a shot of him. #ou_msw
-
Then it all began with some interesting stories from Christian about his journey as a photographer, eventually branching out into other types of media in order to tell stories. His anecdote about crashing his van was quite funny, even though he wrote off his poor Land Rover…

Crash!
Whilst i wait for a lift to the hospital.. Here is a record of what happened today.. [UPDATE] I have been asked to retell the story many … -
#ou_msw @documentally explaining how to do his thing in guardian’s plush offices. How about that sofa?! instagram.com/p/ceNR03v3fD/
-
After this presentation we headed out to the canal to give some of these techniques a go!
-
-
Whilst I was out there, James Murray from the Guardian interviewed me about how I would apply some of these methods in the classroom. Thanks man!

Teacher Matthew talks about his students and live blogging @documentally training #ou_msw audioboo.fm/boos/1529743
-
…and then I had a go at recording an Audioboo myself. It’s harder than it looks!

-
Christian then summed up with a demonstration of Storify and a Q&A. I learnt loads from today and am very greatful to Christian Payne, Jane Matthews and the Open University on running such a great event.
